The challenge
Surf Life Saving Queensland gives volunteers a huge range of ways to get involved, from patrol roles to driving IRBs, operating radios and crewing rescue craft. All of that opportunity was buried in long text and scattered documents.
For a young nipper ageing up, or someone brand new to the club, it was hard to see the path ahead or work out what each award actually asked of them. That uncertainty is one of the quiet reasons people drift away.
What we did
We turned the pathway information into an interactive guide people can explore on their own. Instead of reading through pages of requirements, members choose the direction they are curious about, “so you want to be a Patrol Captain?”, and see the awards, prerequisites and course requirements laid out in a clear, visual way.
It links straight out to the SLSQ Members Hub, the course list and club sign-up, so the next step is always right there. The whole thing is designed to feel like an invitation rather than a rulebook.
The result
Members can now picture where they fit and what it takes to get there, which takes a lot of the guesswork out of staying involved. Surf Life Saving Queensland saw a real reduction in drop-off among the younger group who so often leave once they age out of nippers.
More members staying on means more trained volunteers on patrol, and more lives kept safe on the beach. We were glad to be part of it.
