Video, podcast, full course: each is good at something different, and the right choice depends on what you need people to do, not on which format is in fashion. Here is what each one does well, when to reach for it, and how they often work best together.
When a video works
Video is hard to beat for showing something. If people need to see a process, a piece of equipment, a behaviour or a place, video makes it concrete in a way words cannot. It is also a strong choice for short explainers, demonstrations, software walkthroughs and anything where tone and human connection matter.
Where video falls down is interaction. On its own, a video is something people watch rather than do, so it is better at building awareness and understanding than at practising a skill. It also dates more quickly and costs more to update than text-based content.
When a podcast works
A learning podcast, or audio more broadly, suits content people can absorb while doing something else, like driving, walking or commuting. It is great for stories, interviews, leadership messages and ideas that work well as a conversation. Audio is also relatively quick and affordable to produce and update.
The limits are obvious: audio cannot show anything visual, and like video it is a passive format. It is excellent for building understanding and culture, less suited to step-by-step procedures or anything that needs a diagram.
When a full course works
A full eLearning course is the right call when people need to build a skill, practise it, and be assessed. Because a course can include interaction, scenarios, decisions and knowledge checks, it can move people from knowing to doing. It is also the format that integrates with your LMS so you can track completion, which matters for compliance.
The trade-off is that a course takes more to design and build than a single video or podcast, so it is worth reserving for the moments that justify the depth.
A quick way to decide
- Need to show something? Lean towards video.
- Telling a story or sharing ideas people can listen to on the go? Consider a podcast.
- Need people to practise, decide and be assessed? A full course.
- Just-in-time support for a single task? A short video or a job aid, rather than a course.
The formats work better together
The best programs rarely rely on one format. A course might open with a short video to set the scene, a podcast might reinforce the ideas afterwards, and a job aid might support people on the job. A designer works out the right mix for your audience and your goal, drawing on whichever formats serve the learning. We make all of these in house, which you can see on our craft page.
Getting the mix right
If you are not sure which format, or which combination, fits your situation, that is exactly the kind of question to bring to a scoping conversation. Start from the result you need and let the format follow. Our free Health Check is built for exactly this.
