If you are buying eLearning, you will run into two acronyms: SCORM and xAPI. They are the standards that let a course talk to your learning management system and report who did what. You do not need to be technical to make the right call, and this guide explains the difference in plain English.
What SCORM is
SCORM stands for Sharable Content Object Reference Model. It has been the industry standard since the early 2000s, and it is still the most widely supported. A SCORM course is packaged into a file that you upload to your LMS. When a learner launches it, the course reports back a handful of things: whether they completed it, their score, pass or fail, and time spent.
There are two versions you will see: SCORM 1.2 and SCORM 2004. Both do a similar job. SCORM 1.2 is older and simpler, and 2004 adds finer control over sequencing and scoring. The vast majority of LMS platforms accept both.
The strength of SCORM is that it is reliable and supported almost everywhere. The limitation is that it only tracks what happens inside the LMS, and only a narrow set of data. If you want to know more than "did they finish and what did they score," SCORM starts to run out of room.
What xAPI is
xAPI, short for Experience API and once known as Tin Can, is the newer standard. Instead of reporting a few values back to an LMS, xAPI records "statements" in the form of actor, verb, object. For example, "Sam completed the manual handling scenario" or "Priya watched the safety video to the end." These statements are stored in a Learning Record Store, or LRS.
Because it works this way, xAPI can track learning that happens beyond a single course or even beyond the LMS. It can capture activity on mobile, offline learning that syncs later, simulations, and detailed interactions inside a course. That makes much richer reporting and analytics possible.
The trade-off is that xAPI needs an LRS to store the data, and your systems and reporting need to be set up to make use of it. The extra power is only worth it if you are going to act on the extra data.
The short version of the difference
- SCORM tracks completion and scores inside your LMS. Simple, reliable, supported everywhere.
- xAPI tracks detailed experiences anywhere, stored in an LRS. Powerful, flexible, more to set up.
It is also worth knowing about cmi5, a newer profile that brings the best of both together: the simple LMS launch of SCORM with the richer tracking of xAPI. Support for cmi5 is growing, though it is not yet as universal as SCORM.
Which one should you use?
For most organisations, the honest answer is: whichever your LMS supports and your reporting needs.
- Choose SCORM if you need straightforward completion tracking, your LMS is SCORM-based, and "who finished and what did they score" is the data you care about. This covers the majority of compliance and standard training.
- Choose xAPI if you want detailed analytics, need to track learning outside a single course, support offline or mobile use, or have an LRS ready to put the data to work.
A good provider will build to whichever standard fits your setup, and will ask about your LMS before they start. We build to both SCORM and xAPI as standard, so your custom eLearning drops into your system cleanly. If you do not have an LMS yet, that is a separate decision a designer can help you with.
The bottom line
SCORM is the safe, widely supported default. xAPI is the more powerful option when you have the systems and the appetite to use richer data. The right choice is the one that matches your LMS and the questions you want to answer, not the newest acronym.
